Jean Philippe Charbonnier has an amazing series of photos of french psychiatric hospitals. They were used in an article in the magazine 'Réalités' (1955). You can see where a lot of psych wards in films and other series got their inspiration: checkered floors, big wooden fences, lots of tiles all over the place,...
Some of the pictures weren't used at the time because they were deemed too shocking, I can imagine the one below being one of them. Even so, it's at times very endearing to see the way he portrayed patients and their nurses.
