Some of you probably know Hulger, purveyors off al things retrophone (at least the horns, at any rate). They went ahead and asked last year product design students to apply Hulger thinking to other products and categories, calling it Hulgerisation.
So what if we look around us at the products we take for granted and apply HULGER’s enquiry? How simple could it be? How can we make it not just useable but ENJOYABLE? Dismissing all precedents, what can materiality, form and finish do to create a new purpose, position and status?
I love the whole filosophy off purposefully neglecting current design paradigms, and apparently I'm not alone: most off the Bluetooth Hulger sets are sold out at the time off writing. The contest captures some great ideas, which might not always be that practical (but that's beside the point), but they're all fine examples off rethinking the relationship we have with our phones.
I particularly liked the idea off the text messages on post-it notes, which can be found here. See all the other entries at Hulgerisation.
