What makes YouTube tick?
Asi Sharabi has a great analysis posted on his No Man''s blog.
Turns out there's quite an interesting match going on between user generated content and 'commercial' content such as music video's, commercials, movie trailers, excerpts from tv-shows,...
58 movies belong in the user generated category, which I found pretty interesting. The rest is divided as follows:
- 4 ads in the top 100
- 3 commercial virals
- 31 music videos
- 2 movie trailers
- 2 Asian candid camera show
What's more, the majority of the ugc movies (19 to be precise) are genuine attempts to produce something worthwile, as opposed to just showing off homevideos, expert skills, cats and dogs,...
Finally, looking at the viewing figures for the commercials: creativity seems to pay for itself, who needs network television anwyay (notably Sony Bravia and the VW Unpimp ze Auto spots).
The good news is that he promises to do a kind of continuous analysis of YouTube content in the future, so watch his space...
I'm just left wondering why the following movie doesn't feature in the top 100:

Great movie! I never saw that one :)
