Quite an interesting post by Seth Godin, who went mattress shopping this weekend in Sleepy's, a chain which comprises about 400 stores and is owned by one man: Harry Acker.
I'd walk into one of them just to try out the phone he posts about. It makes me think of 'The Wolf', the fixer that was played by 'Harvey Keitel' in Pulp Fiction. Bonus points for anyone who comes up with a proper nickname for Harry. Looking at their homepage, Harry 'the Crusher' Acker comes to mind, and stories like the following one add a whole new dimension to something as basic as a mattress vendor:
"if there's anything in the store, anything important, that's broken
and not fixed within 72 hours (including policies, prices, inventory,
whatever), his job is to pick up the phone and dial 300.
And Harry Acker, the owner, the billionaire, answers. "This is Harry." And you tell him and he fixes it."
Actually, Keitel playing Winston Wolfe looks like he could be a mattress salesman, warning you off the effects a bad choice of mattress could have on your back.
